“Don’t worry about things. Don’t push. Just do your work and you’ll survive. The important thing is to have a ball, to be joyful, to be loving and to be explosive. Out of that comes everything and you grow.”

“All of the good, weird stories I’ve written are based on things I’ve dredged out of my subconscious. That’s the real stuff. Everything else is fake.”

“Let the world burn through you. Throw the prism light, white hot, on paper.”

“I don’t believe in being serious about anything. I think life is too serious to be taken seriously.”

“Looking back over a lifetime, you see that love was the answer to everything.”

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”

“May you be in love every day for the next 20,000 days.”

“If you write a hundred short stories and they are bad, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. You fail only if you stop writing.”

Ray and George Burns
When still a teen-ager, Ray made friends with radio actor George Burns, who gave Bradbury his first pay as a writer — for contributing a joke to the Burns and Allen show. His first published short story, “Hollerbochen’s Dilemma,” appeared in 1938 in Imagination magazine.

  1. Lovely post B-Ray on a lovely man. I read in The New Yorker that as a child he waved to the red light of Mars, wishing to travel there. His article was just in last week’s issue. Ray Bradbury spoke of those worlds calling him home; it made me happy to think that maybe he is in the Heavens having a great time. He certainly will be with so many adventurous, good people who love to visit him often in his books.
